The Editorial Independence & Non-Interference Covenant
1.1 Complete Newsroom Sovereignty: All journalism produced by Flobstar, including special investigative series supported by philanthropic grants or collaborative data shared by public health agencies, is conceived, reported, written, and edited under the sole direction of Flobstar editors.
1.2 Absolute Prohibition of Pre-Publication Review: Prospective and active partners do not have the right to review, edit, approve, alter, or delay articles, videos, podcast episodes, or graphics prior to public release. The practice known in public relations as "prior review" is strictly forbidden under Flobstar editorial covenants.
1.3 Unfettered Critical Inquiry: Partnership status does not shield any organization, university, hospital network, or multilateral body from critical news coverage. Should a partner institution become involved in a clinical controversy, regulatory enforcement, product recall, research retraction, or public health failing, Flobstar journalists will investigate and report on the development with identical impartiality and rigor applied to non-partner entities.
1.4 Post-Publication Corrections: Any factual disputes or requests for correction must follow Flobstar’s formal Public Fact-Checking and Corrections Policy. Corrections are evaluated solely on documentary evidence and primary literature, not institutional leverage.
Partner Due Diligence & Disqualification Criteria (KYP)
Before formalizing any collaboration, Flobstar conducts a comprehensive "Know Your Partner" (KYP) due diligence review. Prospective partners must demonstrate alignment with established public health ethics and transparent governance.
2.1 Mandatory Disqualification: Flobstar will not enter into institutional partnerships, accept grants, or enter syndication agreements with entities that:
- Manufacture, market, or lobby on behalf of combustible tobacco, nicotine delivery devices, or associated addictive recreational products.
- Manufacture, market, or promote unverified medical cures, unregulated therapeutic concoctions, pseudoscientific wellness products, or therapies that violate established WHO or national health regulator directives.
- Have been criminally indicted or subjected to regulatory enforcement for fraudulent clinical trial reporting, falsified academic data, or predatory pricing of essential medicines.
- Operate as front organizations or undisclosed lobbying agents for political bodies or corporate entities seeking to distort health policy debates.
2.2 Due Diligence Authority:All institutional evaluations are overseen by the Flobstar Standards & Due Diligence Committee, which holds veto power over any prospective commercial or collaborative agreement.
Grant Funding, Financial Transparency & Firewalling
To conduct extensive, on-the-ground investigations into under-reported health crises, such as maternal mortality in rural settlements, supply-chain failures in oncology drugs, and antimicrobial resistance, Flobstar accepts financial grants from philanthropic foundations and multilateral health organizations. These funds are governed by rigid firewall protections:
3.1 Beat Support vs. Story Influence: Grantmakers may support broad editorial focus areas (e.g., "Maternal and Neonatal Health Across West Africa" or "Sub-Saharan Epidemiological Surveillance"). However, grantors are barred from determining which specific clinics are investigated, which experts are quoted, which researchers are featured, or what conclusions are drawn.
3.2 Complete Public Disclosure: Any journalism funded wholly or partially by an outside grant features prominent, transparent disclosure within the article body, naming the funding foundation, the nature of the grant, and affirming our independent editorial stance.
3.3 The Commercial Firewall: Commercial advertising, programmatic display, and sponsored B2B partnerships are physically and operationally quarantined from the newsroom. Editorial staff members receive no compensation, bonuses, or commissions tied to partnership revenues.
Conflict of Interest Disclosures & Newsroom Recusal
Conflicts of interest, both organizational and individual, represent an existential threat to scientific journalism. Flobstar enforces stringent disclosure protocols:
4.1 Institutional Disclosures: Partner institutions submitting research for journalistic translation must disclose all commercial funding sources, corporate co-sponsors, and patent ownership rights associated with the published work.
4.2 Newsroom Staff Restrictions: Flobstar editors, staff writers, and contributing journalists may not accept gifts, paid travel accommodations, consultancy fees, advisory positions, or equity compensation from pharmaceutical firms, medical technology vendors, or healthcare provider networks.
4.3 Mandatory Recusal: If an editor or reporter holds any personal, familial, or historical financial relationship with an institution under news coverage, they must formally recuse themselves from reporting, editing, and publishing decisions concerning that entity.
4.4 Primary Evidence Attribution: In reporting on clinical trials, if a pharmaceutical corporation financed the trial, that commercial relationship is explicitly communicated to readers within the news narrative.
Research Ethics, Patient Privacy & Data Governance
Because health journalism frequently touches on clinical records, patient vulnerability, and sensitive medical situations, our collaborative projects adhere to the highest international data and human rights standards:
5.1 Patient Dignity & Informed Consent: In any collaborative field reporting involving patients, participants are fully informed of how their stories and photographs will be used. Written or recorded informed consent is obtained in the participant's primary language. Patients experiencing acute trauma, severe cognitive impairment, or pediatric conditions receive heightened privacy safeguards, including anonymization where publication could cause social stigma or harm.
5.2 Compliance with Data Regulations: All digital partnership infrastructure, attendee registration systems, and syndication portals comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA / NDPR), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and international health data confidentiality principles. Flobstar does not monetize or trade partner or reader data.
5.3 Whistleblower & Informant Protection: When investigating medical corruption, regulatory failures, or public health mismanagement, Flobstar employs end-to-end encrypted intake channels and defends source confidentiality in accordance with international press freedom protections.
Syndication, Intellectual Property & Co-Publishing
To maximize the impact of evidence-based medical information, Flobstar licenses investigative reports, clinical explainers, and epidemiological analyses for republishing under strict bilateral protocols:
6.1 Intellectual Property & Attribution: Unless explicitly agreed otherwise under a bilateral co-publishing treaty, Flobstar retains all intellectual property and copyright. Syndicated partners must reproduce articles in their full, unedited form, preserving original bylines, publication timestamps, and canonical reference URLs pointing to Flobstar.
6.2 Prohibition of Misleading Framing: Syndicated partners are expressly prohibited from modifying headlines to sensationalize clinical findings, removing nuance, or appending unauthorized commercial affiliate links to health reporting.
6.3 Public Emergency Commons: In situations of international public health concern (PHEIC), disease outbreaks, or localized epidemics, Flobstar reserves the right to waive commercial licensing fees and release verified guidance and surveillance reporting under open-access public service licenses.
Contractual Enforcement, Breach & Immediate Termination
All institutional partnerships are executed via formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) or bilateral agreements that incorporate this Governance Framework as a binding schedule.
7.1 Unilateral Termination for Breach of Independence: Flobstar reserves the unqualified right to immediately terminate any institutional agreement, return unspent grant monies, and publicly disclose the termination if a partner attempts to exert editorial pressure, withhold information in bad faith, or leverage funding to influence newsroom reporting.
7.2 Annual Governance Review:This framework is reviewed annually by the Flobstar Standards & Governance Board to incorporate emerging developments in scientific methodology, biotechnology ethics, and public health law.
